Lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis) is a heavily scented, poisonous woodland flowering plant that occurs throughout the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere in Asia and Europe. In some parts of the world it is known as Our Lady's tears or May bells.
This herbaceous perennial plant forms extensive colonies by spreading via underground stems called rhizomes. Convallaria majalis is the food plant of larvae of some moth and butterfly species, and leaf beetle larvae Lilioceris merdigera that tolerate the cardenolides and feed on the leaves.
